Most courses now follow a \u201ccheckpoint\u201d system that takes your karts through a longer series of paths that don\u2019t give you time to practice your runs or understand the full track layout. You\u2019ll need to memorize a long racetrack instead of getting multiple runs on the same course \u2014 but there are ways to bring back that classic 3-Lap<\/strong> racetrack structure. By playing the game in two very specific ways, you can enjoy more laps in Mario Kart World<\/em>.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll have to search it out for yourself, and 3-Lap races is one of those weird secrets that shouldn\u2019t be a secret at all. <\/p>\n

How To Play 3-Lap Races Offline<\/h2>\n

3-Lap Races<\/strong> aren\u2019t the norm in Mario Kart World<\/em>. There are a few ways to focus and avoid checkpoint-style races, but you\u2019ll have to dig into the menus to find them. <\/p>\n

  • In Grand Prix<\/strong>, play at 150cc<\/strong> speed and you\u2019ll gain additional laps<\/strong> during races. Instead of only racing toward a new location, you\u2019ll race to the location and complete a 3-lap race<\/strong> once you reach the area. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Grand Prix<\/strong> 3-lap races are embedded in courses with 5 checkpoints<\/strong> at 150cc. It sounds complicated but once you play you\u2019ll see what we\u2019re talking about. If you haven\u2019t tried 150cc yet, you may want to try it for a more classic gameplay experience. <\/p>\n

    For a more straightforward way to play 3-lap courses<\/strong>, you\u2019ll want to select VS Races<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    • Select VS Race<\/strong> -> go to the Custom Rules<\/strong> menu and switch \u201cCourse Selection<\/strong>\u201d to Open<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    • Make sure to set Course Selection to Open<\/strong> instead of Random or Connected. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      When Course Selection is set to \u201cOpen<\/strong>\u201d you\u2019ll be free to select courses in any order from a list. Select the courses from the world map and only choose the top option<\/strong> (the one at the location, no line going to another location on the map) \u2014 while not every location has a 3-lap racecourse, this is easily the best way to get 3-lap courses. More often than not you\u2019ll get a traditional 3-lap course when selecting the top option<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

      How To Play 3-Lap Races Online<\/h2>\n

      Playing 3-Lap racecourses online is a lot trickier because you won\u2019t be able to select them yourself \u2014 the races come up as a vote. When you enter online races, you\u2019ll matchmake<\/strong> with other players on the world map.<\/p>\n

      When choices appear as vote options<\/strong>, typically you\u2019ll travel to the pictured locations<\/strong> in a race. To avoid these checkpoint races and get traditional lapped races, you\u2019ll want to vote for Random<\/strong> tracks.<\/p>\n

      • In online play in the Race<\/strong> game mode, select the Random<\/strong> track (blue \u201c?\u201d in the lower-right corner) instead of any of the other pictured tracks. This will randomly select a new location, and these locations are much more likely to be a 3-lap racetrack. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        It sounds oddly complicated, but this is basically the only way to race in classic Mario Kart<\/em> style tracks.
